001 / HUMAN + AI

The photographs and videos on this site are not generated by AI. They are all shot and edited by omi kim.

Instead of using AI to create the photographs and videos themselves, this site is being built to teach AI how to handle the things around them — the presentation, expression, organization, and other parts of the site — and eventually keep the whole place updating itself.

I take the photographs.
I make the work.
AI takes care of the rest.

I just focus on photography.
Cool, right?

WHAT IF AI MADE US
TAKE MORE PHOTOGRAPHS?
01 / The photographs

Maybe future photographers won’t carry cameras anymore.

They’ll ask AI to make the photographs for them. “Make the sky a little more overcast.” “Take one person out.” “Make it look a little more like film.” Sure. Why not? I’m actually curious to see how far AI can take this.

But I’ll probably still go outside with a camera. I won’t necessarily have anything in mind to photograph. I’ll just walk around. Some days nothing happens. Sometimes it starts raining. I like rain, so that’s usually a bonus. I’ll keep walking, take a few photographs, walk some more, and eventually go home without having made anything particularly great.

Then I look through the photographs.

They’re all kind of terrible.

Why did I even take this?

And yet, somehow, there’s always one I don’t delete. No real reason. I just like it. Maybe that’s part of what photography is.

And now AI is starting to make photographs like that too.

Wait.

It can make the bad ones too?

A little out of focus. A strange composition. Weird light. Not quite right, but somehow convincing.

Come on.

You really went that far?

What a bastard.

But I don’t think that means going out to take photographs suddenly becomes pointless. I’ll probably keep doing it anyway. I’ll carry a camera through the city, find something, find nothing, make a bunch of bad photographs, and every once in a while come home with one that makes me think, yeah, that’s it.

I don’t want AI to replace that part.

So maybe AI can do something else.

It can organize the photographs. Find things. Keep records. Write things. Publish things. Not because those things don’t matter. They do. But photography has become much bigger than the moment the shutter is pressed.

Maybe AI can help with the work around the photographs, so we can spend a little more time actually taking them. Maybe we get to spend more time outside. Maybe we get to make more stupid photographs.

That’s what I want to experiment with here.

The photographs on this site aren’t made by AI. AI can help with the things around them.

And if AI really is going to destroy humanity?

Go ahead. Try it.

Until then, I’ll make sure to leave behind as many photographs of this real world as I possibly can.

The streets. The people. The rain. The light. The stupid little days.

No matter how good AI gets, today can only be photographed today.

So I’ll take my camera and go outside.

Don’t use AI to make more photographs.
Use AI so we can take more photographs.

That sounds more interesting to me.
